Her passion for sports started as a young child. Gerina first began playing golf at fifteen years old. Gerina was a student at Goddard High School. As a high school student, Gerina was the winner of the New Mexico golf state tournament. She also played volleyball at the national level. The year 2003 was the time she enrolled at the University of Texas. As a senior, she won each tournament which she participated in. In her undergraduate seasons, she won as the conference's best player of year, as well as UTEP's Female Athletic of Year.
